“ Second time at Basso and I was even more impressed with the overall business operation. They obviously have strong management. The location is just off Highway 64 and not far from Washington University campus. The easiest identifier is the huge AAMCO sign. Parking is free surface or parking garage connected to another business is also free. The garage is eek, but works. I noticed they had security in the lot. The restaurant is below ground and has an amazing dark lighting atmosphere. It's part fancy with fireplace, part group dining with two tables that seat 20 and part sports bar that's in the center with probably over 20 TV's. It's a beauty. The kitchen is open and you can see the pizza ovens cranking out pies. The overall generates a warm and cozy that's comfortable for dressy or casual occasions. My first visit was two in a booth. Exceptional service and food. This was over seven months ago. The steak was magnificent! My second and recent days ago was a party of 45. This was an impromptu gathering that the staff pulled off for us in the back. 95% of our party was together, others in nearby booths. The service was exceptional. Most ordered drinks, small bites and pizzas. I had a 15 year Old Fashioned which was scrumptious! Also enjoyed lamb balls and truffle fries. Basso is known for a large wine selection which many took advantage of with yummy margarita pizza. They have a cellar. The checkout was shockingly smooth for a large group. That's why the extra star for my review. I will return next time in Saint Louis and recommend. ”
“ The ambiance really sells this place, but their food wasn't bad by any means. The service we received here was fantastic. Big fan of the crispy meatballs and their pizza had a solid crust, but needed more sauce. Favorite dishes: Crispy meatballs, calamari fritti ”
“ We were celebrating some birthdays tonight and this was all of our first time here. Love the ambience, The host was welcoming and the our server Alec was amazing. We sat in the lounge seats because upon making the reservation that was all that was available. It ended up being fine but sitting at a table would've been easier for eating. I got the calamari for an appetizer and basically tried a little of everything. The calamari was good. Was it the best I've ever had no, but was it better than average yes! I was not a fan of the Pappardelle so I ended up with the Mafalda. That was really good. I enjoyed the little lasagna noodles with it. They did charge a large party gratuity but Alec was so personable and attentive that I'm sure he ended up with extra around the table or at least from me. There was another party there celebrating their birthday as well so it seems like a good place for get togethers. All in all it was nicer for the service and vibe than the food. ”
“ 5 out of 5 stars! Are you a heterosexual on a date? Basso's is the place for you. The food is legit good. Ask for Alecc. He's a snack, an approtizer, the main dish. Don't know what to order? Ask Alecc. It's all good honestly. Don't know what to wear on your straight date with a woman? Fornthe love of god Don't shop at Kolh's!!! You're date won't be able to tell you a part from the other straight white men. Maybe ask Alecc for fashion advice. Just tip him an extra 10%. Or like.... show some chest hair? Feel the urge to mansplain Bitcoin? Have a slice of Basso's gourtmet pizza. Your date will thank you as well as Alec, your waiter for the night. ”
“ This has easily turned into one of my favorite date night spots in STL. From the cozy "cave" like ambiance to the deliciously cooked food and beautifully crafted cocktails this place should be on your radar to catch up with a few friends or have yourself a well deserved date night. This time around, we ordered drinks straight away - not hesitating to unwind during our surprisingly short wait on a Sunday night during the holiday season. I had a delectable glass of the barbera and my husband had the Standard Deviation right off the cocktail menu containing the following: Fernet Branca, Centum Herbis, Strega, Lime, Honey, Orange, Saline. Believe me when I tell you I had some cocktail envy when I saw that come out. We paired these sips with a wonderful cannellini dip that shook the both of us with how good it was. Come to think of it, I didn't get any pictures of the evening's meal because it was THAT good. We're also ordered some pasta (of course) and I got the gnocchi that was so hard not to finish all by myself with tender beef cheek and crisp shallots. My mouth is literally watering as I type this. We capped the night off by moving to the bar to chat with the best bartender ever (Mike), who whipped up a few more beautiful cocktails for us and sent us off with the feeling of a successful child-free dinner. Oh, why does my beloved Basso have to be a 12+ hour drive away?! I wish we had one in San Antonio! ”
“ Always a great time at Basso! I added us to the waitlist 30 minutes ahead of time which was perfect, as we were seated shortly after arriving. Our waitress Lilly was very sweet and friendly! We asked her if the bar could do mocktails and she asked what we typically like. They ended up bringing us mocktail fruit spritzes which were quite nice! We were there in time for happy hour, so we started off with some happy hour meatballs and Brussels sprouts. Both were tasty! For entrees, we got the ricotta gnocchi and pepperoni pizza. The gnocchi was just okay in my opinion, as it was paired with beef cheek which tasted like pot roast. It was an interesting combo with the gnocchi and I'm not sure I would order it again. Everything else was delicious! ”
“ I hadn't been here before but I'll definitely be back. HH was on the next level. The wine was smooth, the Cannellini Dip was good, the bread was perfect and the meatballs were the best!! I loved the ambiance a soon as I went through the door and saw the stairs heading down into the basement. I have very bad knees and I honestly have no idea of there is an elevator. Our waitress was super attentive and friendly. She was quick with water when needed and this place was packed! ”
“ I am absolutely stuffed! I have been wanting to try Basso for a while and finally made it on a girls night. I am impressed. I didn't get on the wait list and showed up at 6p on a Wednesday. It was hopping. I was told my wait would be an hour. After 10 minutes, I was approached by a hostess, verified and seated 5 minutes later. Very efficient and friendly front staff!! It's a cool spot but very packed and loud. They had us at a bar top between the bar and booths and it was a bit too much. Too many conversations going on around us and tight spaces. I remember commenting to my friend that if I was a server here, I'd be pissed. Speaking of servers, ours was Amanda and she was fantastic! Super friendly, conversational and came around at all of the right moments. Thanks Amanda!! So I originally chose this spot to try the carpaccio but it was not on the menu, as advertised online. Do not fear, the meatballs made up for it, although I'd like to still try the carpaccio. The roasted cauliflower was interesting; not sure if I loved it but would try again. The wood-fire burger and truffle fries was the showstopper. I wanted to go with a pasta but kept seeing these delicious burger plates passing by so I had to give in. OMG!! This dish was amazing! A wonderful first experience, can't wait to try more dishes. Hopefully it will not be so tightly packed. ”
“ Basso is such a cool spot with a hidden speakeasy vibe that makes it feel like a special find. The low lighting gives it a super romantic and cozy feel, perfect for date night or just a nice evening out. I love the open kitchen concept--it's fun to see the chefs in action--and the real wood fireplace is so inviting, especially on chilly nights. The bartenders and servers are awesome--friendly, professional, and they really know their stuff. The cocktails are amazing, and the food never disappoints. If you're looking for a spot with great vibes and even better service, Basso is definitely worth checking out! ”
“ Can't say enough good things about Basso! The atmosphere, the service , the food? All top notch. Their happy hour is such a great deal too!! $3 select beers? Ummm yes please!! We had the most lovely server which made everything even better! Shout out to Alec with a "c"! So attentive and the friendliest ever. We had had him as our server before and he the best then too! Get the truffle fries! They are the best. Their burgers are too too notch and the pizza is wonderful! Check it out! It's amazing. ”
